Malaria – Mosquitoes, Fevers and Myths

No other disease has claimed more lives than malaria. All eyes are on science: Will it succeed in stopping the parasite and freeing people in the global South from this burden?

The malaria pathogen is a tiny organism, barely larger than the tip of a needle. Its scientific name: Plasmodium, its preferred habitat: the bloodstreams of mosquitoes and humans. Malaria is on the rise: in the global south, one child dies of malaria every minute – and the number is growing. While visitors from the northern hemisphere know how to protect themselves with modern medicines, residents of malaria-endemic regions must find their own ways of dealing with the daily threat. For them, the disease remains deadly. Who will win the race against time – the parasite or us humans? Will the global community succeed in working together to contain malaria?
